How to Style Shelves Like an Interior Designer
Use height, spacing and repetition to make shelves look curated.
Group objects in odd numbers and vary heights. Leave one third of each shelf empty.
Mix books and objects
Stack some books flat, stand others upright and top with a small ceramic piece.
Repeat colour and material
Choose a small palette from the rest of the room and repeat those colours across the shelves. A ceramic piece can echo a cushion, while a wood frame can connect to a nearby table. Repetition creates a visual thread without making every shelf look identical.
Balance is more useful than perfect symmetry. If one side has a tall object, offset it with a low horizontal stack or a wider piece on another shelf. Step back regularly and look at the overall silhouette, not only at each individual shelf. Moving one object can make the whole arrangement feel more settled.
Keep useful items accessible and fragile or rarely used pieces out of reach of children and pets. Shelves are part of daily life, so the arrangement should be easy to dust and adjust. Leave breathing room around objects, and let a favourite book or collected souvenir have space to be noticed.
A practical checklist
- Anchor each shelf with one larger object.
- Use odd-numbered groupings.
- Add something living, such as a plant.
- Step back and photograph the shelf to spot gaps.
