How to mix whites, greige and earthy tones without a flat result.

Pick one warm white, one mid-tone and one dark accent, then vary texture instead of adding colours.

Check undertones

Test paint samples beside your flooring at morning and evening light.

Build depth with contrast

Neutrals work best when light and dark values have a clear relationship. Pair pale walls with deeper timber, dark metal or a grounded textile, then repeat that darker note in a few small places. The contrast gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps the room from feeling washed out.

Look at existing fixed finishes before choosing paint. Flooring, tile, countertops and large furniture all carry undertones that can make a white appear pink, yellow or cool by comparison. Place sample cards beside those materials and view them in daylight and after sunset; colours can shift under warm lamps.

Once the larger colour decisions are made, add variety through surface and weave rather than introducing many new shades. A smooth ceramic vase, nubby wool cushion, linen curtain and visible wood grain can stay within the same palette while making the room feel layered and personal.

A practical checklist

  • Limit the palette to three tones plus black.
  • Add texture before adding colour.
  • Test large paint samples on two walls.
  • Repeat the darkest tone in small doses.
